DAVID: Hello. My name is David, and I'm a music specialist and teacher at one of my favorite places to be, Daniel's Music Foundation. And I'm glad that you're here. In this video, I invite you to sing in a way called call and response. That means that I sing first, and you're there to repeat back what I sing. Let's try it out. If I say--
DAVID: (SINGING) Hello, world --you sing back--(SINGING) Hello world
DAVID: Right, just like that. Well, the first song happens to be called just that, "Hello World," and it's by an artist who actually came to my school back when I was an elementary student. His name is Red Grammer. The second song is "The Days of the Week," where I will be leaving out a day here or there, and you'll need to help me out. Make sure I don't miss a day by singing into the space or gap that I leave. Are you ready to get started? OK, let's begin.
DAVID: Now, remember, I'm going to sing first, and then it's going to be your turn. I'm going to put out my arms so you know when to sing. Or you can listen for that quiet gap or space so that you know when to sing. All right, let's go.
DAVID:(SINGING AND REACHING OUT TO AUDIENCE AFTER EVERY LINE) Hello, world, My old friend, It's another day, Glad to see you again, The sun is up, And I'm ready to play. Hello, world, What do you say?
DAVID: Nicely done. Let's take it to a new level by changing our volume. (WHISPERS) This is called piano, meaning we use a quiet voice. Here we go.
DAVID: (SINGING AND REACHING OUT TO AUDIENCE AFTER EVERY LINE) Hello, world, My old friend, It's another day, Glad to see you again, The sun is up, And I'm ready to play, Hello, world, Now, what do you say?
DAVID: Well done. And that time it was piano. And now we're going to try it forte. (LOUDLY) And forte means loud! Here we go.
DAVID: (SINGING AND REACHING OUT TO AUDIENCE AFTER EVERY LINE) Hello, world, My old friend, It's another day, I'm glad to see you again, The sun is up, And I'm ready to play, So hello, world, Now, what do you say?
DAVID: Nicely done doing it forte! Now that we've tried it piano and forte, let's try for somewhere in the middle, or a mezzo volume. Here we go.
DAVID: (SINGING AND REACHING OUT TO AUDIENCE AFTER EVERY LINE) Hello, world, My old, It's another day, Glad to see you again. The sun is up, And I'm ready to play. Hello, world, Now, what do you say?
DAVID: Well done. For our last song, I will be singing "The Days of the Week." Only, there's a catch. After I sing it completely, I'm going to leave out a day here and there. And it's going to be up to you to sing in that quiet space or gap. So here's the song all the way through so you know what version we're using. Here we go.
DAVID: (SINGING) Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
DAVID: Now that you know the song all the way through, I'm going to take away a day, and it's up to you to fill in that day so that we have all seven. Are you ready? Let's try an example. If I sing--
DAVID: (SINGING) Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday--
DESCRIPTION: David reaches out to the audience.
DAVID: Did you just say Friday? You did? I knew you would get that. That's absolutely correct. Now that you've got it, let's get to it. Here we go.
