JULIANA: Hello and welcome back to another episode of Dance Break. I'm Juliana, and I'm a firm believer that anyone can dance but that nobody can dance like you can. If you enjoy these videos and would like to see more of them, please click the Subscribe button down below, so that we can continue to grow our channel. All right, my friends. Let's get started.
JULIANA: On this episode, I will be joined by Kayla, another amazing member of our community, who will inspire you to let loose and get in touch with the dancer inside of you. Kayla is a participant in our online classes and our online community. She is a regular attendee of both our online dance parties and open mic nights. During this episode, we're going to be doing a very popular group dance called the "Macarena."
JULIANA: This is a really fun dance, but for some it may feel a little bit repetitive. That's because we're going to be doing the same 14 moves over, and over, and over again. But did you know that doing repetitive movements can actually be really good for your health and overall wellness? I know. I thought that was pretty cool too. Studies show that repetitive dance moves can help strengthen our muscles, improve our coordination, and our memory, as the brain is engaged in both mental and physical tasks.
JULIANA:Kayla and I are going to be showing you the moves that we like to do and that work well for our bodies. But you should feel free to use the moves that work best for you and your body. Kayla, thank you so much for agreeing to appear on dance break.
KAYLA: I'm looking forward to it, Juliana. Thanks for having me.
DESCRIPTION: A Caucasian woman with shoulder-length hair and a red shirt, standing in front of a selection of Christmas decorations.
JULIANA: Can you tell our viewers what you like most about dance?
KAYLA: Having fun and being happy. And I love to rock and roll to the music.
JULIANA: Hey, Kayla. Since you're such a great dancer, would you mind helping me show our viewers the moves?
KAYLA: I would love to show the viewers the moves.
JULIANA: Awesome. So as I mentioned, there are 14 moves in this dance. For the first one, I'm going to bring my arm up to about the height of my chest, and the palm of my hand is going to be facing down towards the ground. Then I'm going to do the same thing with the other arm. Then I'm going to take that first hand, and I'm going to flip it so that the palm is facing up towards the ceiling. And then I'm going to do the same thing with the other hand.
JULIANA: Let's put those moves together-- hand, hand, flip, flip. Hand, hand, flip, flip. From there, I'm going to bring the first arm, and I'm going to bring it across my body, so that the hand is resting on the opposite shoulder. Then I'm going to do the same thing with the other arm. Next, I'm going to take that first arm, and I'm going to bring it up and back behind my head. And then I'm going to do the same thing with the opposite arm.
JULIANA: So what I've done is I've taken my arms that were across my body, and essentially, I've just uncrossed them and brought one behind the head and then the other behind the head. Let's try all of those moves together-- hand, hand, flip, flip, shoulder, shoulder, head, head. Hand, hand, flip, flip, shoulder, shoulder, head, head. Wonderful. Next, I'm going to take that first arm, and I'm going to bring it down on a diagonal across my body and place it on the opposite hip.
JULIANA: Then I'm going to do the same thing with the other arm. So now, my arms are making an x in the front of my body. Now, I'm going to uncross those arms, and I'm just going to bring one hand to my hip and then the other hand to the other hip. So they're crossed, and then they're uncrossed.
JULIANA: Let's put the moves together that far. Hand, hand, flip, flip, shoulder, shoulder, head, head, hip, hip, flip, flip, hand, hand, flip, flip, shoulder, shoulder, head, head, hip, hip, flip, flip. Excellent. We have two more moves. So this move is called the Cabbage Patch. But if you didn't grow up in the '80s, let me explain it to you.
JULIANA: So you're going to take your hands together, as if they're holding a really big spoon, and we're stirring a ginormous bowl of brownie batter. We're going to push our arms out around and pull them in. Try that again. We push out, around, and in. Then we're going to add a clap.
JULIANA: Beautiful. Let's put all of the moves together. Hand, hand, flip, flip, shoulder, shoulder, head, head, hip, hip, flip, flip, around, and clap. Again-- hand, hand, flip, flip, shoulder, shoulder, head, head, hip, hip, flip, flip, around, and clap. So those are the choreographed moves if you would like to use them.
JULIANA: Even though we're doing a group dance, remember that enjoying music through dance may look different for everyone, and that's OK because there's no right or wrong way to enjoy a dance break. As Pearl Primus, who is an American dancer, choreographer, and anthropologist said, dance is my medicine. So let's get strong, and healthy, and dance together. Kayla, are you ready to get started?
KAYLA: Let's get this party started.
JULIANA: Awesome. Let's do this. All right, everybody. Now, you know I love to start by just feeling that music a little bit.
["MACARENA" PLAYING]
JULIANA: Find your groove. Kayla, I see you are finding your groove. And here we go. Hand, hand, flip, flip, shoulder, shoulder, head, head, hip, hip, flip, flip, around, and clap. Hands, hand, flip, flip, shoulder, shoulder, head, head, hip, hip, flip, flip, around, and clap.
JULIANA: Hand, hand, flip, flip-- shoulder, shoulder, head, head, hip, hip, flip, flip, around, and clap. Again-- hand, hand, flip, flip, shoulder, shoulder, head, head, hip, hip, flip, flip, flip, around, and clap. On your own--
["MACARENA" CONTINUES]
JULIANA: Go, Kayla!
["MACARENA" CONTINUES]
JULIANA: Looking good--Get it, girl. All right, everybody. Now, let's just try some improvisation. Just let your body move in a way that feels good to you. Go, Kayla. Go, Kayla! Go, Kayla! Go, Kayla! Go, Kayla! Go, Kayla! Go, Kayla! Go, Kayla! That was awesome, everyone. Great work. Hey, Kayla. Did you have a good time?
KAYLA: Yes, I did. For sure had a great time. I love DMF. It's so much fun with all the great parties we do, and all the dancing, and all the online events. It's so much fun. I love being part of this community.
JULIANA: I'm so glad, and thank you so much for being here. Thank you for taking the time to dance with Kayla and I. I'm proud of you for taking a few moments out of your day to do something good for your body, your mind, and your soul. I hope you had as much fun as I did.
