JULIANA: Hello, and welcome back to another episode of Dance Break. I'm Juliana, and I'm a firm believer that anyone can dance, but that nobody can dance like you can. If you enjoy these videos and would like to see more of them, please click the Subscribe button down below to help us grow our channel. All right, my friends, let's get started.
JULIANA: On this episode, I will be joined by Amanda, another amazing member of our community who will inspire you to let loose and get in touch with the dancer inside of you. Amanda is a participant in our in-person free class program. She also attends our drop-in classes online and often performs at our online open mic nights. During this episode, we are going to be learning a dance that my fellow teaching artist, Jennifer Sheehan, and I created for our drop-in class series.
JULIANA: Amanda and I are going to be teaching you the moves that we like to do and that work well for our bodies, but you should feel free to use the moves that work best for you and your body. Remember, enjoying music through dance may look different for everyone, and that's OK because there's no right or wrong way to enjoy a dance break. Amanda, thank you for taking the time to appear on Dance Break.
AMANDA: Thank you for having me. I'm happy to be here.
JULIANA: Can you tell our viewers what you like most about dance?
AMANDA: I like the movement, I like dancing, and I like moving to the beats.
JULIANA: Hey, Amanda, would you be willing to help me show our viewers the moves?
AMANDA: Oh, yeah.
JULIANA: Excellent. Let's do this. We're going to be breaking this dance into four sections. One for the intro, another for the verses, another for the prechorus, and last but not least, for the chorus. And as always, there is going to be time for some improvisation. For the introduction section of this song, we are going to be playing some air instruments.
JULIANA: First up, air guitar. Now, it doesn't matter which side of the body you choose to play your air guitar on. I'm going to lift one hand in the air and then play the other hand right in front of my chest, just like I'm rocking out on that electric guitar. Beautiful. Next, we're going to rock the air drums. So I'm going to bring my hands to one side, and then I'm just going to roll across the drum kit all the way across my body.
JULIANA: Next we're going to play the keys. I like to do this by bringing my hands in front of me and wiggling my fingers. You can even move those hands out and back in if that feels good. And last but not least, we're going to be doing some air singing. So maybe you want to put one hand in the air rock style and then sing into that JULIANA: Let's put that all together. Air guitar first. Bananana na nanana. Air drums. Bananana na nanana. Air keys. Bananana na nanana. Air singing. Bananana na nananaa. Excellent job. For the verse of the song, we're going to use a move called the Funky Monkey. Now, I like to do this by bringing one arm up in the air and one arm down towards the ground, and then I'm going to alternate, which means switch.
JULIANA: So we go, monkey, monkey monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey. Then we're going to play some 16th notes. Now, 16th notes are pretty fast. So I like to say tika tika. Can you try saying that? Tika tika. Fantastic. Now, to play the Tika tikas. I'm going to bring one palm up in the air, and then I'm going to take the fingertips of the other hand and bring it in to gently tap the palm of the hand.
JULIANA: 1, 2, 3, 4, or Tika tika. Try the other side. Tika tika. Tika tika. Beautiful. Let's put that together. Monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, tika tika. Fantastic job. Now, for verse number two, instead of the monkey, we're going to use a Raise the Roof. So I'm going to bring both hands up in the air like I just don't care, and I'm going to push them up towards the ceiling and then try the other side. Push, push, push, push, push, push, push, push. Lovely job.
JULIANA: For the pre-chorus of the song, we're going to use a move I like to call Wipe the Window. So I'm going to bring one hand down, and then I'm going to bring it out in a circle like I'm wiping the window. Then I'm going to do the same with the other hand. Wipe the window. Back to the first hand, wipe the window. And the other side, wipe the window. Good Let's try that. Wipe the window. Wipe the window. Wipe the window. Wipe the window.
JULIANA: Next, we're going to go to one side. And it doesn't matter what side of the body you would like to use. And I'm going to take both hands out, push them around and pull them back into my body in a small circle. Then I'm going to move in front of me and do the same movement, but this time, I'm going to make that circle just a little bit bigger. And then I'm going to go to the other side of my body. And this time when I draw the circle, it's going to be the biggest one yet. So I draw a big circle.
JULIANA: Then I'm going to open my fingertips towards the ceiling, and I'm going to take my hands and push them all the way back to the original side of the body. Let's try that again. So we make a little circle, come to center, make a bigger circle. Go to the other side, make an even bigger circle. Open those hands, fingertips towards the ceiling, and push those arms all the way back around. Fantastic work.
JULIANA: Now, for the last part of the song, the chorus-- it's also my favorite part of the song-- you're going to take your thumbs, curl your fingers in, point your thumbs toward the ceiling like you're giving a thumbs up. Then you're going to take those thumbs and point them into your chest for all. Then you're going to make a heart with your hands, and then you're going to point out towards me like I'm pointing towards you. Let's put that together. Thumbs in, make a heart, now point to me.
JULIANA: (SINGING) I'll be there for you.
JULIANA: Then we're going to bring our hands up towards the ceiling. Maybe you even want to wiggle your fingers a bit like the rain. And then you're going to bring them all the way back down. Good. Let's put that together.
JULIANA: (SINGING) I'll be there for you When the rain starts to pour
JULIANA: Repeat.
JULIANA: (SINGING) I'll be there for you
JULIANA: And this time we're going to do lightning arms. So I'm going to bring my hands out on a diagonal, and then I'm going to bring them up to a corner, then switch and go up to the other corner, and then switch and go back to the first corner. Let's put that whole thing together.
JULIANA: (SINGING) I'll be there for you when the rain starts to pour
JULIANA: I'll be there for you
JULIANA: Lightning arms
JULIANA: (SINGING) Like I've been there before
JULIANA: Repeat.
JULIANA: (SINGING) I'll be there for you
JULIANA: And then you're going to reach out one arm nice and wide to the side, then the other arm nice and wide to the side and you're going to shimmy, shimmy, shimmy, shimmy, shimmy, shimmy, shimmy. A shimmy is a full body shake. Now, you should shimmy in a way that feels best for you. That's what I think makes the world go round, everybody shimmying in the way that feels best for their body. Let's do that whole section again.
JULIANA: Shimmy--"I'll be there for you when the rain starts to pour"
JULIANA: I'll be there for you--
JULIANA: Lightning arms.
JULIANA:(SINGING) --like I've been there before
JULIANA: I'll be there for you cause you're there for me--
JULIANA: Shimmy.
JULIANA: (SINGING) --too
JULIANA: That was awesome. All right, my friends, I think we're ready to try it with some music. Hey, Amanda, I just have one more question for you. Are you ready to rock and roll?
AMANDA: Let's go!
JULIANA: Awesome. Let's do this! All right, my friends, get ready with that air guitar.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
JULIANA: Drums. Keys. Vocals. And monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, tika tika, monkey. Tika, tika, wipe, and a wipe, wipe, wipe, small, medium, large, and push, and thump, heart, point, rans. Thump, heart, point, and lightning arms. Thumps, heart, point, and reach, reach, shimmy.
JULIANA: Now get ready for roof. Roof, roof, roof, roof, roof, roof, roof. Tika, tika, roof. Tika, tika, wipe, wipe, wipe, wipe, small, medium, large, and push. And thumbs, heart, point, rains, thumbs, heart, point, lightning arms. Thumbs, heart, point, and reach, reach, shimmy.
JULIANA: All right, my friends, this is the best part. I want you to improvise. Just let the music tell your body what to do. Go, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda. Oh, girl, you're doing such a great job. Keep it up. Go, everyone. Go everyone. Go everyone. Go everyone. Yeah, my friends, that was is amazing! I am so proud of each and every one of you. Hey, Amanda, did you have a good tim?
AMANDA: Yes, I had an awesome time.
JULIANA: Well, I am so proud of you, my friend. You did beautiful work. Thank you for taking the time to dance with Amanda and I. I'm proud of you for taking a few moments out of your day to do something good for your body, your mind, and your soul.
