JULIANA: Hello, and welcome back to another episode of Dance Break. I'm Juliana, and I'm a firm believer that anyone can dance. But that nobody can dance like you can. If you enjoy these videos and would like to see more of them, please click the Subscribe button down below to help us grow our channel. All right, my friends, let's get started. On this episode, I will be joined by Deborah, another amazing member of our community who will inspire you to let loose and get in touch with the dancer inside of you.
DESCRIPTION: Footage of Deborah singing and dancing on various stages with members of the DMF community.
JULIANA: Deborah has been a long time participant in our in-person group class program, and has performed at several of our DMF special events. During this episode, we are going to be using choreography that Deborah came up with herself. I know pretty cool. Now Deborah and I will be showing you the moves that we like to use and that work well for our bodies, but you should feel free to use the moves that work best for you and your body.
JULIANA: Remember, enjoying music through dance might feel different for everyone, and that's OK because there's no right or wrong way to enjoy a dance break. It reminds me of a quote that I once heard. "When the music hits, don't simply follow these steps, make them" Deborah, thank you for taking the time to appear on Dance Break.
DESCRIPTION: An East Asian woman with dark short-cropped hair is sitting on a couch. She is wearing glasses and a dark blue shirt.
DEBORAH: You're always welcome. And I feel happy to be here.
JULIANA: Deborah, can you tell our viewers what you like most about this particular dance?
DEBORAH: The dance has a beautiful movement towards it.
JULIANA: Hey, Deborah, since you came up with the moves, would you like to help me teach them to our viewers?
DEBORAH:Yes, I will.
JULIANA: Wonderful. So for our first move, we're going to make our body float as if we're in water. So maybe you move your arms slowly, up and down. I like to wiggle my fingers a little bit. And this will be the move that we use during the intro of the song. Lovely. For the next move, I'm going to bring both hands on one side of my body at about hip height. Then I'm going to push them up, bring them around, and then pull them back down on the other side.
JULIANA: I like to call this move the rainbow because it's as if we're drawing a rainbow in front of our body. Then we're going to repeat the move in the opposite direction. For the next move, we're going to bring both arms out in front of us. You can even let them cross to make an X. And then you're going to open them out in opposite directions nice and wide. Let's put that whole sequence together, again, starting with the rainbow.
JULIANA: So both hands come to one side, we push them up, bring them around, and pull them back down. Then we make a rainbow in the opposite direction. Bring both arms out in front of us. You can even let them crisscross, and then open them wide in opposite directions. Fantastic job. For our next move, we're going to be making waves.
JULIANA: I like to make waves by bringing my hands out in front of me about the height of my belly button, with my palms facing out and my fingertips facing up. Then I'm going to push them up. Then flip my fingertips down towards the ground and push my hands down. Then flip my fingertips up towards the ceiling, push them up and then flip them down and push my hands back down. So you can do this as fast or as slow as you would like, and really in any direction, as long as it feels to you like you're making a wave in the ocean. Fantastic work.
JULIANA: For our next sequence or pattern of moves, we're going to start with one I like to call seaweed arms. So I'm going to take one arm, and I'm going to push out to the side. And then I'm going to do the same with the opposite arm. We're going to do each side 2 times. So we go seaweed arms, switch seaweed arms, switch seaweed arms, switch seaweed arms. Then I'm going to bring both my hands to about the center of my chest. And I'm going to bring the palms to touch in a clap.
JULIANA: Next, I'm going to cross my forearms to make an X and bring my hands to rest on the opposite shoulders. Let's put that entire sequence together. Seaweed arms. Seaweed arms. Seaweed arms. Seaweed arms. Clap and cross. Fantastic job.
JULIANA: The next move is one I like to call the train because it reminds me of a train just chugging down the tracks. So I'm going to bring both of my arms to one side, again, about hip height, and I'm going to curl my fingers in like fists. Then I'm going to take both hands, and I'm going to push them out, around, and in. Then I'm going to do the same movement again. But this time, I'm going to move it just a little bit towards the other side of my body.
JULIANA: So we go out, around, and in do the same move again, but this time move it even further to the other side of your body, out, around and in. And then for this last one, you should be all the way on the other side of your body. And we push out, around, and in. Try that with me from the beginning. So we get in our station, and we're going to go out, around, and in, out, around and in, out around, and in, out, around, and in. Excellent job.
JULIANA: Now, to bring it back to the station. We're going to go ahead and take the hands, open the fingers. And we're just going to push the arms around the body and back to the original station. Let's put both of those moves together. So get on your train, make little fists. We go, train, train, train, train. Open those hands and push back to the station. One more time. Train 2, 3, 4, and push all the way back to the station.
JULIANA: Next we're going to swim. So I like to take one arm, push it out in front of me, and then pull it back in, and then repeat on the other side. So we have swim, swim, swim, swim, swim, swim, swim, swim.
JULIANA: Then we have a move that Deborah taught me called Hula hands. So I bring both of my hands to one side of my body, again, at about hip height. And I'm going to push my fingers out 2 times. So I go push, push. And then I'm going to switch to the other side. Push, push. Try that with me. Push, push, push, push, push, push, push, push.
JULIANA: For our last move, we're going to be making lightning arms. I like to do this by bringing both of my arms up in front of me, and then holding them on the diagonal or pointing up to a corner. Then I'm going to switch to the opposite side. Good. One side and then the other. Lightning arms. Lightning arms. Now, the tricky thing about this move is that the first two times we're going to be doing it slowly, then we're going to do four fast. So let's try that together.
JULIANA: So bring your lightning arms up. We go lightning arms slow, lightning arms slow. And then fast, fast, fast, fast. Lightning arms slow. Lightning arms slow fast, fast, fast, fast. Lightning arms slow. Lightning arms slow. Fast, fast, fast, fast. And then go ahead and open your arms nice and wide. Amazing. So those are the choreographed moves if you would like to use them. All right, my friends. I think it's time to get this party started. Deborah, are you ready to rock and roll?
DEBORAH: Yes, I am. Yes.
JULIANA: Now you know I love to start by just feeling that music a little bit. Maybe you want to try that, that floating move that we were talking about. Hands ready for rainbow.
